TransferXL is a legitimate commercial file-transfer service, but that does not make every upload automatically private or suitable for regulated data. Before sending files, check the size and retention limits, enable encrypted transfer for confidential material, and decide whether a temporary link or branded client delivery better fits the job.
Verdict: Is TransferXL legit and safe enough to use?
TransferXL identifies Nimbus Cloud Computing BV as its operator in its published Terms of Service and explains its handling of personal data in a published privacy policy. TransferXL therefore has an identified operator and published terms and privacy documentation, supporting its description as a commercial file-transfer service.
Its safety is conditional. TransferXL offers optional encrypted transfers in which files are encrypted on the sender’s computer and opened with a password. For sensitive files, you must deliberately use that mode, protect the password, and avoid sending it alongside the download link.
TransferXL’s terms also state that the service is provided without a warranty that it will always be secure or available at a particular time or location. Organizations handling regulated, contractually restricted, or business-critical information should evaluate their own compliance, data-location, access-control, and continuity requirements before uploading.
What TransferXL offers
TransferXL supports two basic delivery methods: enter recipient email addresses or create a transfer link and distribute it through your own communication channel. Its FAQ says senders can create a transfer without an account, although the published Free plan allowances apply to the Free-with-account tier.
A shareable link is useful when the direct-email recipient limit is too restrictive. It also shifts responsibility to the sender: an unprotected link should be treated like a bearer credential because it can be copied or forwarded.
TransferXL also provides several practical delivery controls:
- Transfer deletion: Senders can delete a transfer, but deletion should not be treated as recalling files already downloaded by recipients.
- Download notifications: The service can notify the sender when recipients download files.
- Storage-region selection: The FAQ lists Virginia, Singapore, São Paulo, and Germany as selectable locations.
- Transfer management: Account users can manage their transfers instead of relying only on individual confirmation emails.
- Paid branding: Pro and Enterprise list a custom background and custom subdomain.
These controls can be useful for temporary delivery. However, a custom subdomain is not necessarily the same as delivering files from a domain owned by your business.
Free vs. paid TransferXL limits
The official TransferXL plans page lists the following allowances. Limits and plan details can change, so verify the page and upload interface before committing to a large or time-sensitive transfer.
| Limit or feature | Free with account | Pro | Enterprise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum per transfer | 5 GB | 100 GB | 200 GB |
| Transfer frequency or volume | Up to 10 transfers per day; 10 GB daily and 300 GB monthly | 200 GB daily and 6 TB monthly | 400 GB daily and 12 TB monthly |
| Retention | One week | Six weeks | Three months |
| Direct email recipients | Up to five | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Branding | Not listed | Custom background and custom subdomain | Custom background and custom subdomain |
If the Free plan’s five-recipient field is too small, TransferXL says you can create a link and distribute it independently. That bypasses the direct-email recipient field, but it does not remove the need to control where the link is posted or forwarded.
TransferXL safety: encryption, passwords, and link risk
Transport encryption is not encrypted-transfer mode
TransferXL’s privacy policy says the website uses SSL/TLS when transmitting confidential content. That protects data in transit between a browser and the service, but it should not be confused with the optional encrypted-transfer workflow described on the TransferXL website.
For an encrypted transfer, TransferXL says the file is encrypted on the sender’s computer and the recipient needs the password to open it. The sender can accept a generated password or set one. This mode is optional rather than something you should assume is active for every upload.
Password handling is part of the security model
A forgotten encryption password cannot be reset, according to TransferXL’s FAQ. Store it in an appropriate password manager or another controlled location until the transfer is no longer needed.
Send the download link and password through separate channels—for example, the link by email and the password through an approved messaging or phone channel. This is operational guidance based on how the link-and-password workflow functions, not a guarantee against account compromise or recipient forwarding. For broader workflow guidance, see password-protected file sharing.
Deletion cannot recall downloaded copies
Senders can delete a transfer, but deletion should not be treated as recalling files already downloaded by recipients. If post-download control is essential, a temporary file-transfer service may not be the right delivery model.
A practical pre-upload checklist
-
Calculate the complete transfer size.
Check both the per-transfer cap and the daily or monthly volume allowance. A 4 GB upload fits the published Free per-transfer limit, for example, but previous uploads still count toward the daily and monthly allowances.
-
Confirm the retention window.
Choose a period long enough for the recipient’s schedule without leaving files available unnecessarily. Do not assume an expired or deleted transfer affects copies already downloaded.
-
Decide whether the content is confidential.
If it is, deliberately enable TransferXL’s encrypted-transfer option. Do not rely solely on possession of an ordinary link.
-
Preserve and separate the password.
Store the password securely and send it through a different channel from the transfer link. TransferXL says forgotten encryption passwords cannot be reset.
-
Select an appropriate storage region.
Use the available region control where location matters, but do not treat region selection alone as proof that legal, contractual, or regulatory requirements have been met.
-
Review the recipient experience.
For an occasional internal transfer, a standard download page may be sufficient. For client work, consider whether you need a sender-owned domain, brand removal, recipient-email capture, or open and download reporting.
-
Use an approved system for regulated data.
TransferXL’s published terms and optional encryption do not by themselves establish that the service meets your organization’s compliance obligations.
TransferXL vs. WeTransfer
The clearest difference at the free level is the transfer allowance. TransferXL lists up to 5 GB per transfer, up to 10 transfers per day, 10 GB per day, and 300 GB per month for its Free-with-account tier. The current WeTransfer plan documentation lists up to 10 transfers or 3 GB total during a rolling 30-day period on WeTransfer Free.
That makes TransferXL the more accommodating free option when a single transfer is larger than 3 GB or when you send files repeatedly during the month, assuming the published limits remain current. WeTransfer may be preferable when your team or recipients already use its workflow or when its paid feature set aligns better with your process.
WeTransfer Ultimate lists unlimited transfers, custom expiration, password protection, branded pages, and Access Control; Teams adds shared workspaces, team brand controls, and administrative tools. TransferXL Pro and Enterprise instead publish defined daily and monthly volume caps, longer retention than the Free tier, unlimited recipients, custom backgrounds, and a custom subdomain.
Neither choice should be made from the brand name alone. Compare current plan limits, protection modes, retention, collaboration requirements, and client-facing presentation. A broader comparison is available in this guide to WeTransfer alternatives.
Five TransferXL alternatives for different jobs
1. BulkShare for branded client delivery
BulkShare is the closest fit when the main requirement is delivering client files from a sender-owned domain rather than sending a temporary generic link. Its Pro workspace lists up to five custom domains, removal of platform branding, password protection, link expiry, open and download analytics, recipient-email capture, 1 TB of storage, five seats, unlimited shared links, and no stated file-size limit.
The plan is listed at $29 per month or $240 per year after a seven-day, card-required trial with 20 GB, one domain, and one seat. A separate no-signup uploader allows one file up to 2 GB with a 24-hour link; this is an anonymous uploader, not a free version of the Pro workspace. Read more about the role of custom-domain file sharing in client delivery.
2. WeTransfer for a familiar transfer workflow
WeTransfer may be preferable when your team or recipients already use its workflow. Its Free allowance is more restrictive than TransferXL’s published Free-with-account allowance. WeTransfer Ultimate lists custom expiration, password protection, branded pages, and Access Control; Teams adds shared workspaces, team brand controls, and administrative tools.
3. Dropbox Transfer for teams already using Dropbox
Dropbox Transfer lets recipients download without a Dropbox account. Published limits range from 2 GB on Dropbox Basic to 100 GB on several paid plans and 250 GB on Business Plus and Enterprise. Eligible paid plans add custom expiration dates, passwords, logos, and backgrounds.
This is a practical choice when the sending team already manages files in Dropbox. See the focused Dropbox Transfer comparison for additional context.
4. MASV for high-volume media workflows
MASV is aimed more at large or media-heavy workflows than occasional free transfers. Its on-demand plan lists 15 GB free per month, followed by $0.25 per GB, and requires a card for verification. MASV states that there is no limit on how much can be sent and also advertises branded portals, permissions, and workflow automation.
The usage-based model may suit production teams whose volume changes from project to project. Review the tradeoffs in the MASV alternative guide.
5. Filemail for a larger paid per-transfer ceiling
Filemail’s free service lists 5 GB per transfer, two transfers per 24 hours, and seven-day storage. Its Pro tier lists up to 250 GB per transfer, while Business and Enterprise are described as allowing unlimited file size.
It is worth considering when TransferXL’s published 100 GB Pro or 200 GB Enterprise per-transfer cap is the deciding constraint, or when desktop applications matter to the workflow. See the Filemail alternative overview.
Who should choose TransferXL—and who should not?
TransferXL is a reasonable fit when:
- You need a temporary transfer that fits the relevant per-transfer and volume caps.
- The Free-with-account allowance is sufficient and one-week retention works for the recipient.
- You are prepared to enable encrypted-transfer mode for confidential files.
- You can send and store the encryption password safely.
- Download notifications and basic transfer management are sufficient.
- One of the listed storage regions meets your operational needs.
Consider an alternative when:
- You need a sender-owned domain and a consistently branded client experience.
- You require recipient-email capture or more detailed open and download analytics.
- Your files exceed TransferXL’s published plan caps.
- You need a workflow designed around high-volume media production or automation.
- You require provider documentation supporting a specific compliance or security standard.
- You need control over files after recipients have downloaded local copies.
Frequently asked questions
Is TransferXL legit?
Yes, in the limited sense that it is a commercial service with an identified operator, published terms, and a privacy policy. That does not automatically establish that it is appropriate for every confidential, regulated, or business-critical upload.
Is TransferXL end-to-end encryption enabled by default?
Do not assume so. TransferXL’s website describes encrypted transfers as optional. For sensitive material, deliberately select the encrypted-transfer option, retain the password securely, and send it separately from the download link.
How much can you send with TransferXL for free?
The published Free-with-account tier lists up to 5 GB per transfer, 10 transfers per day, 10 GB per day, and 300 GB per month. It also lists one-week retention and up to five direct email recipients. Verify these limits before uploading because plan allowances can change.
When is BulkShare the better choice?
BulkShare is more directly aligned with users who need delivery from their own domain, removal of platform branding, password protection, link expiry, recipient-email capture, and open or download analytics. It is a paid client-delivery workspace rather than a like-for-like free transfer service.
